# Creating a New Case

> Create a case in JurisDiscovery or the JurisTrial iPad app

A case is the foundation of your work in the JurisLit suite. You can create a new case on the desktop using **JurisDiscovery**, or directly on your iPad using the **JurisTrial** app. Once a case exists, it moves between devices and firms through **JurisPrep**, the cloud sync layer.

<Info>
  Cross-device and cross-firm transfer now flows through **JurisPrep** cloud sync. The legacy "import/export to file" workflow has been replaced by automatic syncing — see [Moving a case between devices](#moving-a-case-between-devices) below.

## Create a new case using JurisDiscovery

JurisDiscovery is the desktop eDiscovery and ingest engine where most cases begin. Its case-builder walks you through setting up the case and bringing in your initial documents.

    Launch JurisDiscovery and start a new case from the case-builder. This is where you give the case its name and core details.
  </Step>

    Work through the case-builder steps to configure the case and begin ingesting your documents and discovery materials.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Finish and open the case">
    Complete the builder to create the case. It is now ready for review and, when you're prepared, for syncing to other devices.

## Create a new case using the JurisTrial iPad app

If you're heading into the courtroom, you can also create a case directly in **JurisTrial** — the iPad-first, offline-resilient trial-presentation app.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a new case in JurisTrial">
    Open the JurisTrial app on your iPad and choose to create a new case from the case list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the case details">
    Provide the case name and the basic information JurisTrial needs to set up your trial workspace.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm and begin">
    Save the case to make it available on your iPad, ready for presentation and for syncing through JurisPrep.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Moving a case between devices

You no longer need to manually export a case file from JurisDiscovery and import it into JurisTrial (or vice versa). **JurisPrep** keeps your cases and case data in sync across the suite.

<Note>
  Because syncing is handled by JurisPrep, both the case structure and the underlying case data — documents, tags, and markup — stay current wherever you open the case. Be sure each device is connected and signed in to JurisPrep so changes propagate.
